XXL American Bully Kennels

What a kennel is actually offering when it puts XXL on the sign, and how to buy a big bully without overpaying for a word.

No XXL class exists, which means no kennel is an XXL kennel in any sense a registry would accept. A kennel advertising the term is selling large XLs. Selling them is fine. Charging extra for the extra letter is the part worth questioning, and it is not a premium you will meet here.

What the label is hiding

XXL has no height attached to it, no standard behind it and no body that recognises it. On the ground it gets stuck onto dogs at the heavy end of the XL range, and sometimes onto dogs that are simply overweight. The surcharge that rides with it, often thousands of dollars, is buying you one extra letter and nothing underneath it.

How I would judge a big dog

Start by asking for withers height on both parents. A kennel that will only talk to you in pounds has made a choice about what it wants you looking at, and it is not an accident. Then read what the size is doing to the dogs themselves. Can the parents breathe quietly while they rest? Do they move soundly across the yard and back? Is the bulk lean muscle, or is it fat dressed up as substance? A heavy dog kept lean and a heavy dog kept heavy are two different animals, and only the first of them is likely to see twelve.

Where I stand on the term

I keep a page that ranks for XXL because the word is what people search, and that page says exactly what this one does: buy a soundly built XL, keep it lean for life, and refuse to pay a premium for a label nobody can define. The comparison set out in full.

The terms every puppy here leaves on

The price sits on the card, with nothing added at the end of the conversation. Examined by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic before it travels, sent home with a written health record and enough of its own food to change over slowly, and delivered anywhere in the country by road or by a nanny who flies it in the cabin, never in cargo.

I don’t screen or certify the parents and won’t claim I do. What I do is have every puppy examined by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic before it leaves, and the dates go on the record that travels with the dog.
