Yes, there are 3 blue merle American Bully puppies for sale here today. The coat is uncommon in the breed, and the first thing worth saying is that scarcity and quality are two separate measurements. I’m Greg Harpson, I’ve bred American Bullies here since 2015, and coat is the last thing I select for, well behind temperament and behind structure.

The blue merle puppies standing with me now

These are the only blue merle puppies in the group as it stands, so what you see is the whole of it. Each one has been looked over by my vet before they travel, with the dates written down for you to keep.

The genetics behind a blue merle coat

Two separate things happening in the same dog. The M locus merle allele breaks the coat into irregular patches of light and dark, and the D locus dilution softens what would be true black down to slate. So a blue merle is simply a merle dog whose dark patches have been diluted to grey rather than left black.

Reading a blue merle, and what it gets muddled with

Most often taken for a blue piebald, which is clean white patching laid over a solid blue rather than true merle mottling. The edges give it away: merle patches have soft, torn borders and drift in shade across the body, while piebald white meets the colour in a sharp line. Eye colour settles nothing here, since both can throw a pale eye.

Where blue merle sits in the breed

Blue merle is the single most searched coat in the breed, and it draws the loudest marketing with it, but neither of those facts is about the dog. The one question that actually decides whether a blue merle puppy is a safe buy is plain: was the sire merle, and was the dam merle? A single merle parent is fine and gives you an ordinary, healthy dog. Two merle parents is the pairing that produces double merles, and you cannot read that off the puppy sitting in front of you. Ask me about both parents of any merle I have and I’ll tell you without dressing it up.

It sits at the very top of what buyers chase in this breed, and the loud end of the market knows it, so a blue merle listing is where you meet the hardest selling. Treat the scarcity claims with care: merle itself is uncommon rather than rare, and a diluted merle is a step past that, but the figures attached to the coat run far ahead of how hard it actually is to produce one healthy single-merle litter.

To place it against its neighbours, here is how blue merle compares on how scarce it really is and on how often buyers go looking for it. The coats beside it in the table are the ones people most often weigh against blue merle.

What this coat means for the dog’s health

The only coat that carries two separate risks at the same time. Merle bred to merle produces double merles at high risk of deafness and blindness, and the dilution sitting underneath carries its own association with colour dilution alopecia. The merle question is the one that matters most.

Was the sire merle, and was the dam merle? One merle parent is fine. Two is what produces double merles, and you cannot read that off the puppy in front of you. Ask me about both parents of any merle here and I’ll give you a straight answer. A seller who won’t is telling you something.

Beyond the coat, the rest is about the breed rather than the colour. The full picture is here, and you can see how every coat lines up.

I don’t screen or certify the parents and I won’t pretend otherwise. What I do stand behind: every puppy is examined by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic before it leaves, it has had DHPP with the booster and the canine influenza shot by ten weeks and been dewormed between two and ten weeks, the written record travels with it, and you take it to your own vet inside the first week. Any dog I breed can come back to me at any point in its life.

Asking after a blue merle puppy

Tell me roughly where you are and I’ll walk you through getting the puppy to you, whether that is me meeting you within a couple of hours of Sedona, ground transport, or a nanny who flies the puppy home in the cabin. I’ll also give you an honest read on whether this one fits your household.
