Comparison
XL vs XXL American Bully
Two letters apart on paper, a few thousand dollars apart in practice, and only one of them is a size anybody can actually define.
XL tops out the real size classes in this breed, a male measuring 20 to 23 inches at the shoulder. XXL tops out nothing, because it is not a class. Nobody has written a description for it, set a height for it, or recognised it. It is the word a seller reaches for when the dog is a big XL, and seeing through it keeps money in your pocket.
XL, defined
XL is a measurement and only a measurement. A male comes in at 20 to 23 inches at the shoulder and a female at 19 to 22, built on the identical frame, structure and temperament as every other bully. Weigh a grown male and you are usually looking at 80 to 120 pounds.
No new breed, no cross hiding in there, no change of personality. Take a standard bully and add height. That is the whole of it.
XXL, decoded
Strip away the extra letter and XXL translates to this: a large XL, priced up.
No class carries that name, no description governs it, and there is no height at which XL officially becomes it. Out in the real world it gets pinned on dogs at the very top of the XL range, and, I will say it plainly, often on dogs that are just carrying too much weight, because a fat bully takes a flattering photo.
| XL | XXL | |
|---|---|---|
| Recognised class | Yes | No |
| Defined height | 20 to 23 in male | None. Undefined |
| Typical weight claimed | 80 to 120 lb | 120 lb and up |
| Standard exists | Yes | No |
| Typical price | $2,000 to $5,000 | $4,000 to $12,000 |
Read the last row and you have read the whole scheme. That gap is several thousand dollars of premium attached to a word that defines nothing.
What the extra size does to the animal
Pushing a dog past the top of XL is the same bad bargain as squashing one below pocket, just from the other direction. You pile more mass onto joints expected to serve for twelve years, you leave a dog that already cools poorly even worse off in the heat, and you make a heart work harder for longer.
Zoom out across dogs as a whole and the bigger the body, the shorter the life, on average. This breed does not escape the rule. Keep a well-made XL lean and it will most likely still be around after a heavier dog, bred for the scale, has gone.
And then the unglamorous reality. A hundred-and-thirty-pound dog runs up bigger bills at the feed store, the vet and the boarding kennel, and when it is twelve with sore hips, getting it into the back of the car becomes a two-person job.
How to spend your money well
Set on a large bully? Buy an XL, and buy one that is built right. When you ask about the parents, ask for their height at the shoulder, not their weight, because weight is the figure people inflate and height is the figure that actually fixes the class.
Yes, I keep a page that ranks for XXL, purely because that is the phrase people search, and it carries the identical message to this one. Calling a dog XXL earns me nothing.

Ask for the parents’ height
At the shoulder, not on the scale. You will get the true figure, even on the days it lands below what you were hoping for.
