Standard and Classic American Bully Puppies

Standard and classic American Bully puppies: the build the standard was written around, raised in my home in Sedona.

A standard male measures 17 to 20 inches at the withers, a female 16 to 19. Classic sits at the same height on a lighter, leaner frame. Both come out of the same program here.

Each Standard and Classic below is standing here in Sedona today, raised under my roof and photographed as he is.

Standard or classic?

Same height, different build. The standard carries the heavy bone and the wide chest most people picture when they hear American Bully. The classic is leaner through the body, closer to the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier the breed was drawn from back in the 1980s.

One is not above the other. A classic is often the easier of the two to live with day to day and tends to move more freely on a walk.

Why I point first-timers here

New to the breed? A standard hands you everything a bully is known for at a weight an ordinary home can actually manage. An XL at seventy pounds and up is a serious amount of dog for a first owner, and the food and the vet climb right along with the frame.

Temperament, which is what you are really buying

The standard calls for a confident, outgoing, people-loving dog with a steady head. Aggression toward people is a disqualifying fault. That disposition is the reason the breed exists, and it is what I breed for ahead of size or coat.

The full picture on temperament, and how the breed differs from a Pitbull, the question I get asked the most.

The health side, and a vet you can call yourself

Before any puppy leaves me it is seen by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic here in Sedona. That visit is dated on the written record you carry home, and the clinic’s number is on the page so you can ring and confirm it.

The shots start with DHPP, then a booster and canine influenza at ten weeks. Worming runs every two weeks from two weeks of age. All of it is written down and travels with the dog. The protocol, step by step.

I do not screen the parents and I will not pretend I do. What happens is a general veterinary check plus my own eyes on the litter every day from birth. No breeder can honestly promise a dog free of every inherited condition, so I don’t.
