American Bully Skin Problems

Allergy is not the only thing that wrecks a coat. Mange, folds, yeast, hot spots and dilution alopecia all look alike and none of them take the same treatment. Here is how to read them before you open your wallet.

A sore, unhappy coat on a bully has about half a dozen common causes, and each one wants a different fix, which is exactly why a guess costs you. Allergy leads the list, but demodectic mange, infected skin folds, yeast overgrowth and colour dilution alopecia all show up as a miserable-looking dog and all get mixed up with one another.

A field guide to telling them apart

What you seeLikely causeWhat confirms it
Itching, foot chewing, face rubbing, recurring ear infectionsAllergyElimination diet or skin testing
Patchy hair loss around the face or forelegs in a young dog, not very itchyDemodectic mangeSkin scrape at the vet
Redness and smell in the folds, the groin, the armpitsSkin fold dermatitis or yeastCytology, a slide under a microscope

Circular scaly patches, may spread to peopleRingworm, a fungusCulture or a UV lamp examination

The one shortcut worth memorising: how hard the dog is itching separates the two biggest culprits. Allergy makes a dog frantic. Demodex often does not itch at all, the dog just goes bald in spots. So if you are told a bare patch on a four-month-old is an allergy and that puppy is not scratching, ask for a skin scrape before you treat anything.

Demodectic mange, because the name scares people more than it should

Demodex is a mite nearly every dog on the planet carries, yours and mine included. It only causes grief when a young dog’s immune system has not yet got on top of it, which is why it surfaces between three and eighteen months and then clears as the dog matures.

It does not spread to other dogs or to people. It is not evidence of a filthy kennel. The localised kind, a patch or two near the face, often sorts itself out with no treatment. The generalised kind, covering large areas, is a bigger deal and needs the vet.

I spell this out at length because it is common in the breed, it looks frightening, and owners keep being told a bald patch means the puppy was bred carelessly. Far more often it means the puppy is four months old.

Folds, which trace back to the build rather than to any disease

More wrinkle on a dog means more warm, damp skin pressed against skin, and that is prime ground for bacteria and yeast. You get redness, a particular smell, and sometimes raw skin down in the crease.

The fix is mechanical, not medical. Wipe the folds, dry them properly, and do it on a schedule rather than waiting for trouble to start. A dog with real facial wrinkle needs this a few times a week for the rest of its life.

This is one reason I say plainly on the exotic page that a heavier, more compressed dog carries more of this. It follows straight from the build, and the build is precisely what the market pays extra for.

The line between home-treating and going in

  • Skin that is raw, weeping or bleeding
  • A smell, which nearly always means infection has set in on top
  • Hair loss that is spreading rather than holding still
  • Anything that has not turned around in two weeks of doing the sensible things
  • A dog no longer sleeping because of the itch

Steroid course after steroid course is a flag that nobody ever found the real cause. They work, and that is the trap, because the dog improves every time and the reason it keeps happening never gets chased down.
