A letter, not a class

XXL American Bully Puppies

XXL is not a class the breed recognizes. Here is what the dog behind the label really is.

There is no XXL in the American Bully standard. The recognized classes are Pocket, Standard, Classic and XL, and nothing else. XXL is a name some sellers give an XL sitting at the top of his height range. The dog can be perfectly good. The label is just a label, and a label should not cost you more.

Here right now

Each XXL below is standing here in Sedona today, raised under my roof and photographed as he is.

What a seller means by XXL

Almost always, a large XL. When people search XXL American Bully for sale or XXL American Bully puppies for sale, the dog they are shown would be judged as an XL every time. Using XXL to describe a heavy line is fair enough as a figure of speech. Attaching a premium to it is where I part company.

I will never charge you for the second X. If you want the biggest puppy in my litter, tell me, and I will point you at him by name.

Ask about height, not about letters

The only number that forecasts anything is height at the withers. Weight is the number that flatters. I measure at the withers and I will hand you both parents’ figures without you having to pull them out of me.

Ask what the puppy eats, as well. A four month old can be pushed to look enormous by overfeeding, and it is the joints that pick up the bill a year or two down the line.

The direction that should worry you

Pushing a bully past the XL standard tends to drag structure with it: wider fronts, broader chests, shorter muzzles, more mass bearing down on the same joints. It is the same breeding pressure that creates problems at the micro end of the breed, only pointed the other way.

The dog that stays sound is the one built to the standard. Here is what tends to go wrong in this breed.

What I have standing

XL and standard puppies out of the same program. If the biggest dog is what you are after, say the word and I will tell you honestly which puppy fits and how he is shaping up. Start on the XL page.

Plenty of people call this dog an XL bully rather than an American Bully, and that page lists the very same puppies. Still weighing up which class fits your home? Every puppy I have for sale sits on one page here, and the figures for each age are laid out on the puppy price page.

The health side, and a vet you can call yourself

Before any puppy leaves me it is seen by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic here in Sedona. That visit is dated on the written record you carry home, and the clinic’s number is on the page so you can ring and confirm it.

The shots start with DHPP, then a booster and canine influenza at ten weeks. Worming runs every two weeks from two weeks of age. All of it is written down and travels with the dog. The protocol, step by step.

I do not screen the parents and I will not pretend I do. What happens is a general veterinary check plus my own eyes on the litter every day from birth. No breeder can honestly promise a dog free of every inherited condition, so I don’t.

Write and tell me who is at home and which puppy you have your eye on. I will give you an honest read on whether this is the dog for you, and I will say so if it isn’t.
