American Bully Breeders for Florida
The hardest climate in the country for this breed, the odd Miami-Dade history, and how to buy a bully well from wherever the breeder sits.
I am in Sedona, Arizona, and I deliver into Florida. Of everywhere I send a puppy, Florida is the environment I worry about most, and I would far rather you read why on this page than discover it once the money has moved.
The climate, told straight
In the south of the state you get heat and heavy humidity together for eight or nine months of the year, and that pairing is exactly what a short muzzle has no answer to. A dog sheds heat by panting, panting works only when the air around it can still soak up moisture, and a Florida August leaves it nowhere to go.
None of which makes it impossible. Florida is full of bullies living good lives. What it takes is a household that has genuinely signed up to an air-conditioned dog walked at the cool ends of the day, and that can read the early signs of heat stress: panting that will not settle, a tongue gone dark red, a dog unsteady on its feet.
The law, and the Miami-Dade story in particular
Florida has blocked breed-specific local ordinances since 1990, with a single exception. Miami-Dade was allowed to keep a ban it already had on the books, and that ban stood for more than thirty years before it was finally repealed. With a history like that, a Miami buyer is right to ring county animal services and confirm where things stand today rather than assume.
The second Florida catch is how much of the state lives under a condo board or an HOA. Deed restrictions on a dog’s weight or breed are common, and they are enforced by the association, not the city, so the state preemption does not reach them. Read yours, in writing, before you commit to a puppy.
Delivery
Most Florida buyers choose a nanny, which lifts two full days of heat out of the trip. The full Florida page.
Every puppy, the same terms
The figure on the card is the figure, with nothing bolted on at the close. Examined by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic before it travels, sent home with a written health record and enough of its food to change over gradually, and delivered anywhere in the country, by road or by a nanny who carries the puppy in the cabin and never in a cargo hold.
I don’t screen or certify the parents and won’t claim I do. What I do is have every puppy examined by Bell Rock Veterinary Clinic before it leaves, and the dates go on the record that travels with the dog.
Ask me anything
The awkward questions included, and that goes for a puppy you are weighing up from somebody else as well.
